Description

I analyzed YouTube videos about intrauterine devices (IUDs) to evaluate the information being shared. Using Apify, we data scraped 60 randomly selected videos and then used a random number table to select 50 videos to rate on the DISCERN scale. I also assessed interrater reliability to average DISCERN scale scores across raters. DISCERN Scale scores were averaged across two raters' scores to establish interrater reliability. We found that most creators were health professionals, and most of the videos were educational. Additionally, most of the videos were neutral in feeling tone. Both healthcare professionals and patients were found to stay relevant to the topic of IUDs in their videos. Healthcare providers also did well on making the aims of their videos clear. However, most professionals did not explain what would happen if consumers did not get an IUD. Consumers did not do well on providing additional sources of information in the description box or comment section of their videos, and they did not explain when their experience with an IUD occurred. Healthcare providers and consumers could take this information into account to create engaging and informative videos to reach a broader audience.
