Banned Books Week 2024 is September 22-27. The theme for 2024 is "Freed Between the Lines.” Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores, and libraries. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular. MUW is partnering with MSMS and Friendly City Books to host several events. Details for each event are listed at https://libguides.muw.edu/bannedbooks. The 2024 events that will be archived on this page are
  • "Fanning the Flames: Why Book Bans Are on the Rise And What We Can Do About It," an invited talk with Q&Aby Shannon Oltmann, September 23 at 4:00 pm in Fant Library's Tiered Classroom
  • Banned Book Art Exhibit, September 24, 5:30 pm at MUW Galleries, Summer Hall
