Sept 29, 1944 Dear Mother, I got a letter from you several days back but haven't had one lately. You remember the place where you said you hoped I wasn't. Well that's where I was. We are a little farther on now. Bad weather seems to have slowed down the war. Men can't do much when they are wet and muddy. Some thought the war would be over by the last of September but here it is the last of September and it isn't over by a long shot from the way the Hinies keep slinging 88's. I don't think it will be over for quite some time. No I have never seen anyone I knew. I seldom see anybody outside my own outfit and the McKelory boy is the only one that I know and he is in another battillion. How are the Lums getting along? Tell them I said howdy. How are Leon and his younguns making out? I guess that boy is a whopper by now. Has Leon been doign any squirrel hunt- ing? I guess Scoop Carter is home by this time I wouldn't doubt him being sent over seas when he get's back from his furlough. They pb probably alrady have his Congressional medal of Honer picked out and shined up. I haven't received the box you sent yet. I guess it will eventually get here however. We have only been paid once since we have been over here and I still have that. I am saving a hundred percent of my pay. We ran upon some trenches that were dug in the last war. They must have really dug them deep in those days. Well that's all I can think of. Will writ[e] when I get time. Love from Sonny Boy
