Dear Bernice, 
August. 12, 1944
You probably know by this time that 
I am in France. I am doing fine and 
enjoying life at the present time. The 
country and weather here are beautiful. 
I haven't had it too tough. I have 
dug a good many holes and had a 
few shells land pretty uncomfortably 
close. I have been pretty scared at 
times but not nearly as much as 
I thought I would be. 
It is a lot of fun to be the first 
Americans in a town. The people 
go crazy with joy and yell their 
heads off. They throw flowers and 
pass out wine and cider by the gallon.
You know what kind of an outfit.
I am in, so watch the papers and 
you can tell pretty well where I am.
