AFTER 5 DAYS RETURN TO Mrs. S. H. Smith Pittsboro Miss. Daddy injured eye at Grenada metal fragments Miss Martha Smith 1255 East Moreland Memphis, Tenn. gen 247 1944 PITTSBORO JAN 24 7AN 1944 MISSISSIPPI UNITED STATES POSTAGE THOMAS JEFFERSON 1807-1809 3 CENTS 3 Sunday Afternoon Dear Martha- I've just been thinking what a grand weekend it would have been for you to come home. It's almost like spring. I rushed around and got ready in my black dress, ear screws, scarf and dyed pink wrap around and went to Sunday school this morning. We went on to church. Fellowship was at S.S. Chester, Betty, Ray, Jewel Strat & Wille B. Jerry, Mr. Davis Chester and me. We had a good lesson. Mr. Davis is well up and could have given us some good points if Strat would have let him but you know nobody else has any sense in his estimation. We surely are glad Mr. Davis is with us. He's such a kind man. I must go to see her (Mrs D) this week. Miss Leila and I will go one afternoon. We've had quite a lot of grief all the past week-at the first of the week and part of last I was sick then Tues. night Daddy came in with something in his eye. He couldn't sleep and I was up all thru the night trying to get it out. He went to work the next morning with that eye closed in order to go see a Dr. down there. He had to go to Grenada. The Dr. there got two pieces of steele out and bound his eye up and told him he would be alright. Well time he hit the bed it began to give him fits again. I got up at 9 oclock and went to Miss Leila's to borrow her magnifying glass hoping I could find the trouble. I couldn't see so went after Guy. He came out and got out a small particle but it wasn't relieved so we got Guy to take him to Bruce to see a Dr. Both were gone and they waited at the clinic till 12 oclock when they get back. Dr. Davis got out another piece and they came on home. I had stayed at Ayleen's and it was 1 oclock when they got back. I was so sleepy I could have dropped over asleep. Just as soon as the cocaine died in his eye it started hurting again and after going back to Bruce twice more decided he'd better get to a Dr. that was fixed for that kind of trouble. Leon carried him to Dr. Dayton at Oxford yesterday. He located the trouble at once, removed it and now he's fine once more and am I relieved! During all that he was sick with bowel trouble all one night and so we have lost about 4 nights sleep in all- he hasn't worked since Tues. The Gov. has insurance for him so he'll get something tho I don't know how much but maybe enough to pay expenses he's been out and loss of time. We still haven't heard from Sonny Do hope he didn't head for Southwest Pacific but if we don't hear soon I'll be afraid that's where he's gone. If he should have gone to England we should hear from him very soon. They think Sleech Parker has gone to the Pacific. He left before S. Boy did. They've never heard from him yet. It would be a great relief just to hear a line or two. I go to the office twice every day hoping that something will be there. I keep writing him and sending them to Camp Myles Standish, Mass. He must have sailed from around Boston. I got a little tacky letter from Bernice last week. I know She could write more if She wanted to. She said She had a new permanent. Sally Russell joined by letter today. All the members rushed up to give her the glad hand. Mace Beckett & Gene Hannaford were here this weekend. I guess you read all about Miss's inaugration didn't you? Leon went. He said Ed Lowe was sitting in a Wagon driving in the parade. Did you see Dennis & Gov. Baily's picture in the coach drven by the nigger coachman? It looked like the old South alright. I heard Bro. McKee was home this weekend I didn't see him. They seem to think even tho Mrs. McKee is better, She is likely to die anytime. Charlcie has been real bad again she has pneumonna in her other lung and was worse than ever a few days. Mr & Mrs Reid went back. She is better again and they hope she will continue to improve. I guess you've been pretty busy with your teaching and everything Clelia has been sick with the bowel complaint. Mary has had to cook and send her "vittles" to her. Right here I stopped and told Daddy to lets get up and walk over the pasture or I'd go crazy. We made a circle and now I feel like I've been some where. Listen, hun, I've looked thro all your papers. The tax receipt isn't in them. Daddy says tell you to send to the Supt. of Greenville school and ask him to send you the information you want. he would send it to you I'm sure. You can also go to some of those places where the income tax offices are located and get them to keep you to make out your income tax returns. Daddy has to make a return too and doesn't know how either. I have to write several letters- All due one to Foss Victor, Ivy S- K.C. and Bernice & Chris. Won't get them all written tonght. Since starting this I've cooked supper. we're listening to "We the People" It was true about our armies getting so near Rome wasn't it? If you think those shoes wont be comfortable don't get me any. I can't wear hard stiff shoes. I don't guess one could expect much for $3.00 but I thought they might by chance have something I could wear for everyday. Bye sweet- Mother
