AFTER FIVE DAYS RETURN TO OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON Box 3 Pittsboro Miss Miss Martha Smith 134 fifth Ave. McComb Miss PITTSBORO OCT 2 A.M. 1939 MISS OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER JACKSON Sunday P.M. Dear Martha I guess you are enjoying fall clothes today. It was so cold here last night we had two quilts on the bed. Daddy has been home all the week you know in the Lee case the trial was finished last night and Mr. Lee was convicted again. It was purely prejudice that caused it. He could never get a fair trial in Calhoun Co. the sentence will be life imprisonment. Of course he will appeal again but I'm afraid nothing can be done unless Gov. White should pardon him which is very unlikely- I'm awfully sorry for all of them as he has had a fair chance. I got a letter from Chris. She is liking all right but the work keeps her awfully busy. She has to pay $3000 so if she has to pay 30 or 35 dollars per month on a car she won't have much left but she can at least be doing something and will be much better satisfied. Daddy went back to Jackson today so we are lonesome. He won't be back for two weeks I don't expect. Allie M. is coming home with Chris next week end if the new cars come in. Mere, Bernice, Elizabeth Clelia and I all went down to the tea and miscellaneous shower given for Virginia at May Patterson's Friday. We dressed up the very best we could and I think looked mighty nice. I wore my new hat shoes & dress & Clelia had a new green dress & hat. It was all so very very formal I hardly realized I was among people I'd known practically all my life. We weren't there more than 10 or 15 min. just long enough to go down the receiving line drink punch and OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER JACKSON look at the gifts and out again. Clelia said she certainly did go to a lot of trouble just to dart in there and out so quickly - I was amused at them they tried to be so grand. Luther Nell & June Murphree presided at the punch bowl. L. Nell was friendly- Virginia got a lot of lovely gifts nothing tacky or cheap looking. I gave her a very pretty silk & linen blue bed spread. Clelia gave her a silk comfort (blue) and Elizabeth gave her blue sheets and pillow cases. real pretty- The P.TA has been selling dinners all week - I didn't keep them except to furnish my part. I had enough to do at home without extra- We went to church today but I'm going to fie out tonight. Miss Misenholder will be there to play. We have a big fire and it feels good - last night we had one. Uncle Foss, Chester & Victor were here till almost 11 oclock. I almost went to sleep in my chair. Foss is doing much better hasn't drank any in 3 weeks. He stays here all time except he sleeps at home. I feel sorry for him. He's so lonely I guess DeL. will come back when he gets to where he can send for her. Sonny Boy is doing fine in school He is studying good. James Harold ran away last week and was gone several days. They finally located him at Olive Branch at his Aunt Lottie's- These boys will have their fling. Lou Ella almost cried her eyes out about it. Oren Longhorn has his new house about finished. Had he started it before you left. It's a F.H.A house and is facing Roy Beckett's its real nice. OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER JACKSON Bill Young has quit Sunday school entirely and Mr. McCay has things going his was as far as being a teacher is concerned. Some of them want to fire him but I don't know who would take his place after all he is aways on hand. Bessie is thinking of sending for Bro Chester to come back as he has no job. I guess he'll come before long and get him another WPA job. Poor Bob Young is in rags and nothing to do. Chester is trying to get him on his project hope your sore toe is well ere this try to he careful how you abuse your toes in the future. I know no news. Hope you are fine heaps of love Mother
