PITTSBORO JAN 17 A.M. 1939 MISS. POSTAGE DUE 3 CENTS SENATOR S. H. SMITH PITTSBORO, MISS. Miss Christine Smith 1441 Peabody Ave. Memphis, Tenn OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSiONER JACKSON Monday night Dear Chris, You'll have to excuse my pencil. Dad has my pen. I should have written to you yesterday but was in the bed all afternoon I went to church but wasn't able to go so I had to get in bed when I got home I've felt better today- Sonny Boy and I are really lonesome tonight Daddy left for his work this morning. He is in Holly Springs. He hated to leave and I hated to see him go but he's been off so long it was really necessary if possible for him to get back. He was feeling good so I do hope be can stay reasonably well - Edna Earl Mc and a Lunnford boy got married Sunday at the bride's parent's- Katherine and husband came to be present- that afternoon the four of them drove up here parked at Harrelson's and blew their horn for curb service. They were all smoking and ordered each a coca-cola and an asperin- Their nerves must have been shot- The bride and groom went to Oxford with the Heard's to spend a day or so with them. DeLois spent the afternoon with me. They are all here most everyday- I know she gets lonesome but I get a little tired of them at times. New candidates are cropping up weekly- Forest Parker is announcing for Chancery Clerk this week. Bunk Hardin is running for that also Bob Davis, Boyd Adams and of course Bill Young. Charlie M. Beckett is running for Supt of Ed. I was quite surprised one night last week when Chester & Clelia popped in and stayed till nearly 11 oclock. She took care not to even mention Foss and DeLois and I didn't either. I think it's a shame that they've been here for a month and not a member of the family has been about them except me and Daddy & SonnyBoy. I do think Ivy could have gone had she wanted to - I got a letter from Ivy a few days ago. She said Eleanor was in bed at a kind of sanitorium on a ranch OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI J B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER JACKSON out from Phoenix. She takes malt and cod liver oil 3 times a day and milk 5 times a day. It's such a pity for her to be so far away from those she loves and sick and nobody there who cares. I don't see how Ivy stands it. She said it was killing her. They don't know where Doug is- Martha is in the midst of giving exams. She wrote she was dreading them Carolyn is going to spend a weekend with her some. The league had a little party at Ganley one night last week. Sonny Boy had a good time. He said they had all the toasted weenies and buns they wanted. Bro Clark went with them. He asked me to go with he and Mrs. Clark to some kind of a meeting at Houston Thurs. I think I'll go- How are you liking night school? I'm afraid you're undertaking too much I know you must be awfully tired at night- We had the hog killed Friday. We have so much nice meat and sausage. We made 16 gallons of lard which will be plenty to do me. I sent Dr Creekmore & Miss Ellen a nice lot of sausage. He is going to give S. Boy another pig. I sent Allen some and a lb of butter- I know he enjoyed it. Christine, whatever you do, don't be dating with or running around with Martha H. I happen to know some things about her that has happened since she's been in Memphis. Of course you wouldn't believe anything on her but you don't know so please don't be running around with her or you'll be placed in her class. Even tho she is in Memphis There are plenty of people that still know her. There is no question but that she is a ruined girl. The WMU is planing to give Lorraine Reid a stork shower soon Everything in town is to be invited OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER JACKSON I'm not very Keen on the idea. Ethel and Bill are changed entirely since his announcement. She has insisted on giving me milk lately and Bill actually asked Daddy very kindly about his health- all this has no effect whatever on us and I have an idea they won't fool many people. Nobody seems to think he'll get anywhere- It's bedtime and I've no news. I hope you are feeling good. Write soon. I'm sending the belt of your evening dress. Lots of love Mother
