Chis Phil coming to visit Miami, FL Sept 30 7-9PM 1942 Mrs. S. H. Smith Pittsboro Miss Tuesday night 11 o'clock. Dear Mother, Today was my day off, so I didn't have to go to work this afternoon. I met Corporal Howard Jones at Miami Beach for supper. He's the one who used to be a foot ball coach and is the down to earth Spencer Tracy type. They're restricted from Miami (Clark Gober too) and have to be in bed by 10 o'clock. On the way over I got caught in a rain and was sopping wet by the time I reached the appointed meeting place. The nearest shelter was a beer joint. I was the only girl until a group of about 30 soldiers. One of them looked very sad as he picked his guiter and sang "The Great Speakled Bird." By the time Cpl. Jones and I finally got together it was nine o'clock so we didn't have much time together. I think I must have gone batty as I have no earthy idea when I wrote you back or what I wrote. I must how told you that Phil's leave was condensed and that he won't be able to come for another month also that we combed the city for a place to live and were unsuccessful. Rent will be high during the "season" that lasts until March first. I'm completly digusted but will try to make the best of my present state. When you have time gather what dresses and shirts I have dad send them here. I'll just have them cleaned along as I can. Anyways, they'll be washed by the time they get here. I've forgotten just what I have. Had a telegram from Bill today. He continues to be attentive in spite of my indifferece. I really should write him more often, but there are so many people besides him whom I should be with and never find time for. I know just what you mean when you say Daddy's money always seems to reach for. My current living expenses take practically every thing I make. I sometimes wonder why I work so hard when there is so little compensation and so few hours for fun. I do enjoy the work though and am happier being busy than I would be otherwise. Wednesday noon Had lunch with Jane today and she thinks she's found a place for us to move will call me tonight I'll drop you a card as soon as I have a new address. Had a letter from Phil saying he'd be down in three weeks. I'm glad I'll be moved as he's rather snooty in his ideas about where I'm living, etc. It will be about 2 more months before he gets his Lt's commission. I have to catch a bus out there. Love Chris
