AFTER FIVE DAYS RETURN TO Box 3 OFFICE OF Pittsboro, Miss MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON Miss Martha Smith 1270 Washington Ave Greenville Miss. PITTSBORO APR 27 P.M. 1942 MISS. Sunday Afternoon. Dear Martha, It has rained all morning so we didn't have S. school. I've read till my eyes hurt. Got my glasses back yesterday. We haven't even had dinnieer will have early supper. SBoy and I are alone. I know you're going to be as sur- prised as I was at what I'm about to tell you. Daddy has been fired. It came like a bolt out of a clear sky. In the mail yesterday morning a letter came from the commissioner . Mr. Mize which said- "your services with this dept. will terminate April 30- Please advise where your equipment may be found"- That was all. no reason or anything. Well, it just floored us because we couldn't imagine what was wrong. If he had said they were obliged to cut down the force we wouldn't be surprised have thought anything about it but just to have it put so blunt as to be almost insulting was more than we could understand so after talking it over we decided that the best thing to do was to go see Judge Mize and make him give him some reason for his dismissal not that that would get the job back but he certainty has a right to know why. We are inclined to think that it is some poltical stunt but as Jim E. would say. I don't know how it will be. I can't think it is inefficiency as he has always done his work well. Daddy left for Forrest where Judge Mize lives at 10 yesterday morning. He said if he failed to find him yesterday he'd go on up to Jackson and stay over and seee him in the office Monday. He hasn't come back so I guess that's what he's going to do If it weren't for the fact that SBoy is ready for college I wouldn't care one bit for Poor old Daddy is so tried of living away from home and sitting in a car day in and out. We can live and I don't mind doing on less but we thought it necessary to keep the old job to help SBoy thru and pay up what we owe. but like the sang. I won't worry cause it makes no defference now. that's the truth I'm determined not to allow myself to worry and I don't want you all to either. I'm sure saddy can get something to do and we'll get by- I'm thankful that everything is as well with us as it is. It could be a lot worse. I've been awfully biy all week. Hone tried to get the gaid yard cleaned up. It looks fairly well. I had planned to have my first fried chicken today but after Daddy didn't come back I turned it out. It was rather small.
