Miss Christine Smith c/o Tylertown Times Tylertown, Mississippi Saturday night Dear Chris, Daddy didn't come home this afternoon and it's pretty lonesome for us tonight- I always look forward to Saturday and Daddy's coming home. It makes two weeks seem awfully long. Bernice & I went with Bessie & George to Bruce late this afternoon. Bernice got her hair washed as she's going to Houston Mon. and start to work Tuesday. She called Edward and asked him to come up and carry her to Houston Mon. afernoon. He told her he'd be glad to take her. Sonnyboy is engrossed in Sears catalogue. He never closes his eyes in sleep unless he has first looked thro Sears. Court has been going on all week and will continue thro next week. The Grand Jury billed Jim Chilsteware and he has disappeared. They have found out that he was short 30 or 40 thousand dollars Victor has him a job the first one he's had since he was laid off. It's a WPA job of course- Historical research or something of the kind. I would have thought you and Martha would have seen each other before this as you are so near. It seems that when either of you have dates it would be nice to drive over and see the other. I'm sorry you're blue and don't feel like you're getting anywhere. Have you ever mentioned a raise to the man. I think I'd tell him I couldn't live on that salary. If he doesn't give you a raise you'd better come on home for awhile. It seems to me with so many boys leaving for training camps there should be a lot of jobs open. Watch the ads and maby something will turn up. Write to Ayleen and tell her to keep you in mind. And what ever you do, don't go hungry. You know you can check on Daddy for anything you need at any time and I want you to do it. I know you're going to need a new coat and I want you to get it so go on and get what you need and give a check. You know your Daddy would gladly give you the last penny he has and we can help you along and not miss it- so quit worrying- If you want to stick on awhile do it but don't deny yourself food & clothes that you need. Will you do this? Daddy had to go to Vicksburg over the weekend to check a barge that is to come in- that's the reason he couldn't come home. He's really enjoying staying at K.C.'s It's like home and he gets so tired of cafe food. I'm still getting the Columbian-Progess saw your name in it this week. I believe they have the best paper of the two but of course they have the best town. Don't you ever see Jo Foxworth, Isn't that her town? Is she still with the McComb paper. Jewel said Martha H. is still in Nashville she has about 1 more months work. She said she was going to come home and rest for a little while before she starts on any other job but that she had something in view- when she got ready to go to work. I hear Miss Kate Carter is going to get married soon to a Powell man. Don't you think he's easy pleased. Lois Flanagan has a new studio couch and a wrist-watch while Leslie works out at the saw mill. She says they're going to build them a brick veneer home sometime. Yesterday was Bernice's 26th birthday. I gave her a jr. & nylon stocking and Martha sent her two jrs & just plain ones. You should see Ayreen's baby now. She is cute and sweet as can be. Some time I go get her and keep her for awhile. Sonny B. thinks she's cute but wouldn't own it for anything- neither would he touch it. Bro. Clark will be moved in Nov. I'm just wondering who we'll get. I dread breaking in a new Preacher The Annual Conference is at Columbus this year. A bunch of us are planning to go- Gordon Goren has his place for sale they're waiting to go back to California Gilbert is trying to make some kind of arrangements to buy the plae as they earn more back. I understand Loretta says she's not going to come back. I think she's got a little wild- she hands aroung Shoats Cope day and night. I think I wrote you that R.A. had gone to the Keely. He's back now and back at Tupelo on his same job. I don't know how he's getting along. His wife left him before he went off but went back to him a day or two ago. Dr. C. told Victor that they fussed all the time. I hope he does better K.C. wrote me that Allie was trying to quit smoking. He says the agony of not smoking is so great that it makes his other trouble small. I don't think he's improved much and doubt if he ever does. He's also left off liquor and coffee so all of that should keep him anyway. It's bedtime and they've all left me by myself. Sure wish I could see you If things don't look better come home maybe some other job might turn up. Take care of yourself and be good Lots & lots of love Mother
