Mrs. SENATOR S. H. SMITH PITTSBORO, MISS. Miss Christine Smith C/O Lynn Hotel McKenzie, Tennessee JUL 29 A.M. 1938 MISS. OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER Dear Chris, How are you getting along? I am knitting me a purse with a spool and safty pin. It is real pretty. I'm gonna make Bernice one. I have gone to the revival every night. Bernice Martha, & Eliz. Ellard & me & Bob Young went to Bruce today & got a watermelon & ate it on a real dusty road. We want to go to the water- melon carnival the 11th of Aug. Did you see the We went to a Ball game here (Vardaman & Pitts.) the other day- Bernice & Martha have fixed my hair page boy. It's real pretty. Love May- OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER Thursday night Dear Chris, It's bed time but I want to get this letter off to you in the morning mail. Foss and the girls have just come in from church. I didn't go tonight we've been going every night but have so much work on hand that we don't get off ^for day services. Cecil is doing the preaching but very little interest is being manifested. I suppose it's because Bro Breland isn't able to be here and they think anbody else is able to lead them. Cecil preaches good sermons. May C. seems to be having the time of her life. Bernice & Martha have been working on her hair and she thinks it's perfectly beautiful. They went with Bob to Bruce this afternoon and they got a watermellon and got out in the middle of the road and ate it. Joe Sheffield is the busiest man you've ever seen. I think he considers Foss one of his campaigin managers. Yesterday morning real early he came rushing in to talk over his plans. She was absolutely filthy and wet all over with presperation He rushed all over the house shaking hands with everybody including Sonny Boy. I thought May would kill herself laughing His platform is in this weeks paper I'd send you the county papers if I knew you'd get them. I'll send them anyway Sunday after Daddy has seen them- Martha ordered her some $850 white Peocock shoes from Goldsmith's for $600 They're pretty - real dressy linen pumps. She has spent almost a day drawing designs for Clelia some pillow cases. Bernice & May went to see Elizabeth Ellard this afternoon. They said they had a good time. Bernice got a free book from Book of Month club. It's. The life of Andrew Jackson and won 1938 Pulitzer prize Its a real nice book. OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER I surely am glad you had your teeth pulled. Maybe your arm and side won't hurt so much now. We haven't anything much to eat now Everything has given out in the garden and I have a time planning meals- Bob still doesn't have a job and hasn't a nickle and owes everybody. Daddy hasn't got his vacation yet. I'm going to get off somewhere for a day or so when he does - I'm simply worn out. I am so tired all the time that I'm still tired when I get up mornings. I think I'm going to see Mrs. Harden Sunday if it isn't too hot. I went to Ivy's this afternoon. The church met there and several were there - Etoyle talked so much till poor Miss Hattie couldn't find a chance to give her lecture, so we didn't have a lesson. Miss Hattie is leaving Sunday for Miss State for a two weeks course that the Government gives her. She has bought her lots of dresses and has her trip all planned. We may get a W.P.A. library here and Ivy is trying to get the job of running it. I hope she does as Victor isn't working now. Christine, do you like your work? and is it as hard as teaching school? I hope you are feeling well. You haven't written how you are. Have you lost any weight? I think you will feel lots better when it gets cooler. I know I will- Bernice is going to have Reese get her a tailor made suit for fall. He brought over samples. She selected a pretty navy blue firm woven wool. It's powerfully good material. It will cost her $2850- She isn't going to have him order till just before she goes to school. I suppose she'll have to go back to Liberty. Nothing else has shown up. It's bedtime. I'll write you again. Be a good girl and take care of yourself. Much love Mother
