Mother to Chris Aug. 1938 SENATOR Mrs. S.H. SMITH PITTSBORO, MISS. Miss Christine Smith C/O Hamby Hotel Dyersburg Miss Try Tenn AUG 9 P.M. 1938 MISS. OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER Tuesday Dear Chris, I had intended writing you without fail Sunday, but I had to be sick and in bed most all day and front of yesterday- Am getting better and have been making pear preseves today. I believe Martha wrote you everything that has happened and I'm sure you got it. Bernice is getting her clothes together prepartory for leaving Sunday week. She will go back to Liberty. When Dad was home over the week-end we were looking over your schedule and found you were to be at Savannah on the 19th & 20th - Ode says its only 40 or 50 miles from Corinth where he has work. He said for me to go with him and stay that week-end in Corinth and we could drive to Savannah and spend Sunday with you. It could be so easy but as usual I have to give up my place for somebody else. That darned old picnic of Aunt Allies is on the 20th and of course the house will be full of company and it would be a crime and an unheard of thing for Pauline to leave home at such a time. It makes me so mad - perhaps my last chance to be that close to you. Personally, I am very much opposed to the picnic. It's just a lot of hard work and expense and I never enjoy it - I'd rather stay home all day by myself than go. I have slaved and worked myself to death all summer and now I'm fed up on it. OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON HOWARD DYER COMMISSIONER JOE B. KEITH ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER We are enjoying the gum very much and Sonny Boy treats all his friends. We give some to everybody that comes in I told Sonny Boy I wasn't going to let him open one box till Xmas - so maybe he won't waste it. Elizabeth Ellard spent yesterday afternoon. She is very friendly but of course no company whatever- Foss is making application for a T.V.A job and had to have a picture so He and the girls drove to Grenada Sat. after Daddy came in and had them made. Bernice had some made too thinking if she took civil service exams, she'd have some. They had to pay $150 for 6 each and they are horrible- Bernice is trying to learn to drive but not making much headway- Martha and I have been thinking we'd fix your blue chiffon dress up and send it to you. So will try to do so. I was glad Sneed went to see you. I am sure you were glad to see him- I'd like to see him and hear from you thru him- I have no news so Martha is ready to go to town- I'll write again before long. I hope you keep well .Write me somethong about your work- how many hours you work etc. Do you stand out side in these towns you're working in now? Lots of love from all Mother
