AFTER 5 DAYS RETURN OFFICE OF MOTOR VEHICLE COMMISSIONER Box 3 Pittsboro, Miss STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON Miss Christine Smith Rose Hill Mississippi JAN 24 A.M. 1938 MISS. Sunday Afternoon Dear Christine, While listening to the inspiring programs from Kosiusko, I shall try to write you a few lines. I got a letter from Martha telling me about you sending her the $500 It was sweet of you to send her so much. Bernice also sent her $500 so she can get her shoes go to the dance and still have some left. I suppose she wrote you that John Allen was to be her escort for the dance. She sent me his letter I'll send it go you can see how eager he is to go. Martha was surprised that he accepted- you will notice that he sure wants her to let him know where they'll meet. Of course it will be his first trip over there. I have been feeling better for the past few days. I am weak and have lost some flesh. Guess I'll gain it back pretty soon. I went to preaching this morning at the Baptist church. The house was full and Bro. Breland got off many cracks. I do hope you get to take the trip to New Orleans. I know you would enjoy ^ it and there would he so much for you to see. Polly Pilgreens picture was in the paper this morning. She's going to get married the 11th of Feb. Mrs. Reid was going to the barn to milk and fell and broke one of her arms between the shoulder and elbow - that was a bad place to break and the Dr. wanted to take her to the hospital and put it in a cast Mrs. Reid wouldn't go so they just taped it up. I'm going to try to goo see her. We are to have quarterly meeting here Tues and dinner. I am to make a cake for my part. I guess we'll have a pretty good plate lunch. Victor said that Dwight told him that he might more to Vardaman and put in a Grief station there as Elizabeth liked so well up there and wanted to move. I do hope they do for maybe Chester won't have to be putting out so much on him if he's that far off He most especially won't have to board him. Of course this is more of my business and they certainly wouldn't appreciate my saying so but thats how I feel. Martha said they had been having lots to eat during exams that Kates & Carolyns Mothers had sent. I wanted to send Martha a box but couldn't after I got sick Bernice said she thought she'd go to see Martha when her school is out and on to Ala. to visit Drexl. She hasn't been anywhere since she went back. Willy Flanagan is going to wire Mary's house for ther old telephone box He's going to put him up a phone line from Aline's to Bryan Flanagans. Just some more of Willy's freakish stunts, but I guess thats a cheap way for Gilbert to get his house wired. I had two more teeth pulled Friday I have only two jaw teeth left. I'm going to let my gums heal several days before I go back. Then I'm going to get my plate immediately after I get them all out. I feel like it's going to be the greatest trial of my life wearing them, but I guess I can do what plenty of others do. Vadie Dye passed thru here Wed. on her way to see Aunt Allie. Clelia said she had on a swell fur coat and was riding to Tupelo with a traveling salesman by the name of Rogers. She is visiting her mother at Big Creek. I believe my news is exhausted I hope you get to make your trip. Lots of love Mother MISSISSIPPI STATE STATE COLLEGE, MISS. JAN 19, 1937 Dearest Molly, Thanks very much for the invitation to the dance. I'll be there and with bells on, all dress up in a Tuxedo. It won't be mine but I've already borrowed one; I hope it will fit. One thing though, where will I meet you and a what time that Saturday evening? Be sure to let me know, hear? Yep, we're right in the middle of the exams, and they are giving me fits. I have just gotten in from Chemistry, but it wasn't as tough as l really expected. I've had 2 Monday, 2 Tuesday, and one today. I finish up tomorrow with English. I don't think it will be so very hard, I hope, I hope. How are you getting along with yours. I know you're doing fine in all of them but are you having much trouble? Thanks again for the invitation Molly and I assure you that I will be there one week from Saturday even if I have to walk. Until Saturday week, Love, John Allen Box 484
