PITTSBORO NOV 13 A.M. 1937 MISS. Mrs. SENATOR S. H. SMITH PITTSBORO, MISS. Miss Christine Smith Rose Hill, Mississippi Friday night Dear Chris, Sonny Boy has gone to bed and I am lonesome. We are both about sick with cold. Yesterday we had the T.V.A, Armistice and dedication of school building progam and it was very nice. If the weather hadn't been so bad it would have been much better. Dad came home Wed. nite as they had asked him to act as Master of Ceremonies. He did alright ex- cept as usual did too much of the talking himself. The first was a program by the school consisting of songs reading et (which wasn't so good) about war days- Dr. Dobbs gave an address on "Peace" next dedication of the new building followed by reponse from Board of Trustees It was 12 oclock then and we had an informal inspection of the new school house followed by lunch. I've never seen so much good dinner. I did wish you were all here. After dinner, Granville Byars made a fine speech. Dennis spoke last. He made a good talk and told a lot of jokes about old times. After he got thro they let Mr. Johnson speak and tell them all about how "I" got the TVA here. The lights were then turned on which was the grand finale. All in all I guess it was a pretty good day. There wasn't so many there. Kathryn Wooten came over and spent the afternoon with me this afternoon. I think her main reason for her coming was to get some magazines to read. Anyway I was glad to see her. Daddy got a cute birthday card yesterday from Martha. He was 57. He went back to Starksville to work today and tomorrow. If I had had some body to milk the cow, I would have gone with him and we would have gone to Columbus tomorrow afternoon to see Martha and take in the wedding. Dad went out to try to find Victor this morning to get him to milk and he couldn't find him so I just gave it up. I would like to have gone as I've never seen one of the weddings so I guess I never will now. Somehow I felt like you might go over there for the weekend. Mrs. Hardin was awfully sweet yesterday- She asked about you and Martha. Her Daddy's home has recently burned. She said they were heart broken over it. They saved very little. Mrs. Lane has a new electric washing machine. She is quite jolly over it. I can hardly wait for you all to come home Thanksgiving and I want you to write me by return mail when you expect to get out and if it will be possible for you to meet Daddy at Meridian at Hotel Meridian. I'm writing Bernice also and we must have an must have an understanding about where Daddy will get you - Do you get out at noon Wed.? I hope so for you will have so far to come and it will be so late if its any later. It wil be lots better if you and Bernice can both meet Daddy in Meridian but if this isnt possible he will go by after you. Please write me when you get out and if you can get to Meridian and at what time. I'm writing Bernice to do likewise I'll then have time to write you back telling you exactly when Dad can be there for you. On your trip back you will have to plan for some one to meet you as Dad can't take you back I suppose Martha will come home on the evening train Wed. I surely wanted her to come home last week end but she said she was too busy She is working herself too hard I'm afraid. Miss Leila was here today. She seemed a little more cheerful. She and Mr. Johnson were out for the program yesterday- Chris, I'm sorry you're so dissapointed and dissatisfied with your job. Try not to be so blue for you are still young and have lots of time to do something else to do.Take care of your money and it won't be so long till you're thro with that job. Maybe you can get out and find something you like better when school is finished. I'd try to take it with my chin up. After all you still have much to be so thankful for. We all have Sonny Boy sold calf for $900 His bank acct is [illegible] swelling. I'm real uneasy about him. He is sick about half of the time and doesn't feel like studying. He went to bed with a headache tonight. I forgot to tell you that Allen did'nt come - you know I wrote you that he was to be on the program. He had an accident a few days ago. He was crossing the street and was knocked down by a taxi. He had a broken collar bone, bruises and a fractured arm. Very painfully hurt. K.C. didn't write me about it but I got a lettter from A.B. and she mentioned it Dennis told us more about it yester- day. I think he's getting along ok now Annie B. said Imogene was in school at Delta State. I'm having the tooth ache a lot. I'm going to be compelled to have some extracted- We had a W.M.S. meeting with Mrs. Clark Monday p.m. We had a good time. She had hot chocolate and little cakes with for refreshments. They have that [illegible] old parsonage looking real nce. Bro Clark has gone to conference. They are expecting to be returned and are very anxious to stay. Strat has his house lit up too. I heard Jewell talking about they might get a refrigerator next spring Tom is working at something in New.Orl- La. Christine, when I was waiting in Dr. Kemp's office a few days ago - I noticed a real good looking boy sitting there with his head in his hands. I thought he had the tooth ache There was a woman sitting near by - I asked her if she was having some work done. She said "no, my son over there is having some work done. I was sitting next to him and I turned and asked him if his tooth was hurting. He sat there like a dumb person - never looked up or said one word. I kept watching him and decided that he was either deaf or crazy. After a while Dr. Kemp called for him to come in. His mother got him up and took him in. After they left, I found that it was Jim Herring's brother and he looked a lot like him. He was really pitiful not one word will he speak and Dr. Kemp had to prize his mouth open to treat his gum. Dr. K said that
