Dearest Christine,
You've been gone three weeks today and
it seems like you've been gone that many
months. We've missed you so much.
I got a letter from Bernice saying she liked 
fine so i guess she's OK. She has a real
good place to board with fine people. A
girl from Meridian teaches there and another
girl rooms with Bernice so I guess she
wont be lonesome.
I've been reading where there is a shortage of 
teachers and calls are being sent out every
day. You've gotten several notices of vacanies
this week. today one came telling of a vacancy 
at at Shuqualak a nine month's school at $7250
per month. Martha wrote Dr. Buckley that
you had a job so I guess he'll quit sending 
you notices- so many are quitting teaching
for better paying jobs. Bernice got a 
notice and her grades from Washington
of her civil service exam. She might get a 
call later on as she passed. I surely


was glad she passed.
Elizabeth Ellard got a place at Vardaman teaching
Home ec. got the place Friday and school opens
tomorrow. I guess she'll put in a order for
the fur coat immediately. 
I saw in the paper today where Emily Page had a 
place at Webb, I think most all the girls in 
your class got jobs I've seen so many names
in the paper.
K.C. and kids stayed with us till Monday. I 
thought I'd go crazy. She and them both tried 
to aggravate me all they could. She wrote
that Allen had improved He is still
in the hospital at Hot Springs. 
Martha, Dad, and I are going to Memphis 
and Oxford next week to get Martha
some glasses and some clothes in Memphis
I'm going to try to get her a suit. I 
have had Mrs. Gordon to order her a 
real cute dress with wide skirt
and pretty white collar & cuffs.
She has a beautiful white triple sheer
to make and three school dresses. I'm
going to get her a white sweater
to wear with the white wool skirt
you had. I guess you'd better send
her dotted swiss back. She'll need it -
Did you get the dress I sent?

Did your grey shirt fit?
You will have your first month taught
out next Friday. I know you'll get a 
thrill out of having your own money to
do what you like with. Now, listen
Christine don't you send any money 
home to us we don't need it and 
don't want it. I want you to save 
all you don't need and may be
you can get into something else 
later on so keep your money and if 
we happen to get in a tight I'll 
call on you. I'm so glad you can 
make something for yourself and i 
don't want you to feel like you 
owe us anything. You'd better
put it in some bank.


The Wise girl who taught in the nursery
school has a place at Leland teaching
2nd grade.
Our school opens next Monday week. The 
building is almost completed-
Martha hasn't heard a word from
Kate so she doesn't know if Kate is 
going back to school. 
Leon has about decided to go to Memphis
and take some kind of a course in big
engines. I think it has at last dawned
on him that he doesn't need to be in 
any college - most especially Ole Miss.
Mary Knox came home one weekend - She 
barely spoke to Martha.
Katherine Goar went home with Cleve 
and Eva from the picnic to try to
find her a job in Clarksdale. I hope
she can get something. 
Martha H. wasn't home this week. She 
still works at C. City
Dad goes back to work a week from 
tomorrow and Louisville will be his 
headquarters. He will have six counties
and one of them will be Kemper
where Bernice is. He won't be so 
far from you while he's in there

so I guess he'll go to see you. I sure am
glad he isn't going back to Biloxi for he 
can come home every weekend from Louisville
I think it will be nice if you can
go see Martha some weekend but I 
guess it won't seem right with all
your friends gone. Martha will only 
have one more Sunday at home. She 
will leave on the 9th. 
Aunt Allie is with us but I think
she wants to go home now. She wouldn't 
go back with Ivy from her picnic
She enjoyed seeing all her relatives 
very much. 
We went to negro meeting Friday nite, even 
to Aunt Allie - It was fine - Jessie
and Effie have been taking the top
off the house shouting. They had me
on the "mercy seat" the night we
were there and the Preacher preached
his whole sermon to him. He was


about 12 yrs. old and didn't seem to be 
noticing a word the man said-
We had corn, tomatoes, fried chicken,
and muscadine pie for dinner
Did we write you that Martha H. had cut
her hair. She has a big front bang
and gives the swirl around the face
like you wore yours many years ago
when you went to State to the Club
congress. Anyway, she looks about 10
yrs younger. 
J.C. Leonard is going to trying 
hatching awhile. Miss Leila won't keep
him. He's going to move into the old 
log house by Miss Polk's house. all 
the little boys are thrilled to death for 
they think they can go to see him at 
night. 
You must write me everything about how
you are, your work etc. Do you 
like teaching any better? I'm sending 
you Bro. Breland's notes which I know
you will think quite nice.
