Senator S.H. Martha Smith Pittsboro, Miss. Miss Christine Smith Rose Hill, Mississippi PITTSBORO AUG 19 A.M. 1937 MISS. Pittsboro, Miss Thursday Morn. Dear Chris, We were very relieved and glad to get your letter. Mother was afraid you were sick since you waited so long to write. The much dreaded "Aunt Ollie" picnic is tomorrow you know what that spells - company and cooking. Mother's too busy to write now, but will write you in a day or two. You will have to be satisfied with one of my letters for the present. We have already cooked a devils food cake and have almost finished the cocoanut cake. Sonny boy is griping as usual because they are to be convoyed its the picnic grounds. Aunt K.C. and children will arrive sometime today, I suppose. Uncle Allen won't be here, since he's in the hospital at Hot Springs. Daddy will be home Saturday. He said in his letter that he wasn't sure that he would go by to see you on his way home Saturday, but would stop on his way back. Bernice got a call Tuesday from a supertintendent who asked her to meet him in Louisville at 1:00 o' clock Tuesday. It was 10:30; so there was a grand such to get her off. She hired Ernest Jr. to take her, and they got to Louisville at 12:30. She got the school - the name of which is Liberty. It is in Kemper County - not far from you. It's just a 5 teacher school and pays about $6000 per month. Allie Miller Rodgers had the place, but she resigned at the last minute. We've bragged about the school considerably to the people here . Bernice will leave Sunday. I know its going to be lonesome here. I will leave Sept. 9. Elizabeth has gone to Praire, where she will work in her Daddy's store for two months or longer. She is going to buy her a fur coat with her savings. I know Katherine Wooten will miss her. Bernice and I went to Calhoun City Monday. Bernice had a wisdom tooth pulled. I tried to get up a conversation with Carter Kemp, but he wasn't very talkative. Louie Metz saw Bernice and one walking down the street. He insisted that we go in the drug store with him and have a drink. I wondered why he had become so liberal. It didn't take long to find out. He thought I was you, and he knew that you had a job teaching school. His plan was to sell you some insurance. The first thing he said when we sat down was, "Where are you going to teach?" I guess he felt pretty "let down" when he learned his mistake and discovered that he had wasted his nickle. I enjoyed the Cocola neverthe less. Leon came by Sunday night and took Bernice and me to Bruce. We went in the White House Cafe. and spent an hour or more listening to Leonsand the proprietor discuss world affairs. It was most interesting. Katherine has quit her job. She wasn't getting to work in the office any more, and couldn't make enough wrapping butter. I think she is planning to go back with Cousin Cleve if he comes to the picnic The town is going dramatic. maybe I should say, too, that this family is going dramatic. Both Sonny Boy and Mother are out standing in the casts of the two plays that are to he presented here in the near future. Sonny Boy is playing in "Aunt Hit" and Mother will star in "Hold your Seats," however, she is trying to get out of it since the play is so silly, and it would be an injustice to her. After all, she can not afford to drag down her name as a famed actress that she has established in the past. I don't blame her I wouldn't lower myself to do such a silly piece of acting, either. Mother is making mayonnaise in her room. She's in there because "Big Sister" is on. I don't hear the egg beater now, so the little playlet must be most interesting. Mother chauffered Mrs. G.W. Malone to Bruce yesterday. I'm sure the trip was interesting I'm sorry to have missed it. On the way home, they stopped at Mrs. Jessie Lamar's, where eggs were purchased by the callers. We wish you were going to be here for the picnic. Three deceased chickens as in the refrigerator waiting to be fried. The Clark girls' sister visisted here this week. Bernice and I went to see her. She's real cute and pretty. Leon dated her twice they came over here one night. Mr. & Mrs. Bill young have returned from Texas. I hope the people here have thier minds eased. Everyone has been asking everyone else, "When are Bill & Ethel coming home?" - Currently J.C. Leonard mowed our yard. At intervals he told us about the ice cream supper that he attended last Night. Mother is going to send you some things as soon as the rush is over. I guess I had better stop, or Morgan will be weighing this and charging extra postage Love, Martha P.S. (1) Mr. Dwight Ellard and Mr. Irvin Shannon made a business trip to Clarksdale Wednesday. (2) P.C. Shannon is visiting relatives at Pittsboro this week.
