Mrs.SENATOR S.H. SMITH PITTSBORO, MISS. Miss Chirstine Smith Box 888 M.S.C.W. Columbus, Miss. Sunday afternoon Dear Chris + Martha This is a mighty pretty day, tho rather cool we've had a fire all day. No preaching today and I enjoyed the rest. We went to S.school. Just as I was getting dressed Annie B. drove up to see me for a little while she came to Stanley's Friday night, I carried her to S. school with me and then we drove over to the cemetery for a few minutes. She wouldn't stay for dinner as she was leaving soon after 12. I enjoyed seeing her even tho for a short while. Bernice + the Reid girls didn't get to take their trip to Shiloah on acct. of the boys having to work. Bernice said she didn't care as she wasn't so crazy to go anyway. Daddy had to come back from Meridian and is being sent to Corinth. He will leave in the morning. If he stays up there thru Mon. I'm going with him for one week. Christine, I'm anxious to know what your work is. if its to wait on tables don't accept it. I was surprised to hear you had got a job after Dr. O. wrote Allen as he did. I'm glad you can get that much off as it will give you more money to spend in other ways that you wouldn't have otherwise Martha, I ordered you a coat from Goldsmith's but when it came it was big enough for Bernice and I knew it be too large. I ordered a size 12 but I couldn't find size on it It cost $17.00 if you can find anything down there you like mabye you'd better get it. or I might get a chance to get you another somewhere. You could look at them the next time you go to town. I got me a cheap black dress at Bruce yesterday. I'm not so taken up with it but I'm going to get me another if I go to conferences. Christine, have you read "Gone with the Wind"? Bernice is getting it this month. Annie B. said it was wonderful. We got three new magazines yesterday. Pictorial is much improved it has a book length novel and a novellete each month now. Bernice got her 1st month's pay Friday She only got $55\00 She thought she'd get $60\00 She's lying abed reading the new magazines. The jury gave Mr. Lee Penitentiary for life Everybody was so shocked I think it was the most unjust verdict that has ever been rendered by any jury I heard all the evidence. Prejudice was the cause of it all. You have never seen such mob you couldn't get standing room in the court house and the biggest part of the crowd was anxious to see him hung. They will appeal the case and his lawyers think it will be reversed in supreme court. Yes I got the Spectator but I would rather know what you write Christine, I think its awfully nice that you are going to get your photo in The State magazine Do you love me? (I mean a picture) Ivy Ellord got her new teeth today I'm anxious to see her. I bet she looks funny. Dad is looking more like himself since he has had in for some time. We'll have to have lunch at the church next Sunday for the last quarterly conference. We're just going to have sandwiches stuffed, eggs, pickle + pie with coffee. Annie B. brought a nice brown pair of Rice Oneal shoes that were too small for her I'll send them in a few days and the on that they fit best can have them. She's never worn them but very little Ed + Jette May Lowe have a new baby boy who has come to board in their home. Mother + Babe doing nicely- Martha are you about to work yourself to death? I feel like you are because you haven't written lately. Don't take everything so seriously and you'll have a better time. Don't try to put in two hours your job everytime. Does your shoulder still hurt you? I hope not. Annie B. said Bobby was writing home awfully blue letters and that she wrote she had failed on a test and didn't know but what she'd fail them all. I guess she's just homesick. and somebody had stolen five dollars from her too. Martha, I see your point in getting town girls for you little sisters. I hope it works out like you're expecting it too. Chris I hope you get to chaperone lots of girls to shows- or I should have said girls to shows lots of times- I enjoyed your letter very much and it was written especially neat however, your Pop couldn't make out every word. He thinks your writing is hard to read but I don't I must quit and write to Aunt Allie and KC- Hope everything is lovely with you. I'll write again before long- Lovingly Mother
