Mrs Senator S. H. SMITH PITTSBORO, MISS Miss Christine Smith Box 888 M.S.C.W. Columbus, Miss Thursday Night Dearest Girls I won't write you but a short letter I've been sitting in the courthouse all day and have a bad headache. They have been trying the Lee Case most all the week. Finishes up all the evidence at dark tonight. I didn't feel like going back to hear the lawyers pled tonight as much as I'd like to. Bernice has gone back. Most every body thinks there will be a hung jury. The State has put up one of the most desperate fights I ever knew about Abernathy has had two lawyers assisting him on the other hand Mr. Lee had two fine lawyers. Mr. Abb Patterson and Hirman Creekmore It has been very interesting and i've let everything go to the dogs at home for two days. I'm really glad its over because I'm needed at home. Sonny Boy has been picking cotton every afternoon to help Make money to get some ball suits for the big boy's team- He's very tired when night comes He picked 33 lbs this afternoon- I had thought i'd get you off a package but since I've had to go to court it may be several days yet before I get it ready- Christine, I would have been glad for you to have gone to state and you may go ahead and buy you an evening dress for the next time if you wish. Chris, K.C. wrote me that Dr. Parkinson wrote all that as you were so late applying for work he had nothing now he said he was sorry you didn't apply sooner. You must relieve Martha once in a while and let her get out when you get a chance I know It would be a relief to her to get an afternoon off occasionally- I went to a P.T.A meeting yesterday afternoon and was on the program I was also elected [illegible] of the thing for which I am not proud of - Daddy has been home since Friday on acct. of the Lee case but he left since dinner and went back to Meridian. It surely is lonesome tonight. Victor is very busy on his new job. He is going to need a ear and I guess will buy some kind of a trap - quite a number of Conner Men have already lost their jobs among them are Hon Jim Bryant and Ray Spencers. Strat H. got Ray Spencers job it pays $ 7500 per month but Daddy and Victor both say he won't hold it a month on acct of being so smart and trying to be so careful of carrying it all out just so and of course this is going to make the men who work under him (on material Projects) mad and they'll petition for him to be moved. But nobody can tell Stuart anything as you well know- Martha H. packed her trunk and moved to Stanley's to board. She told Bernice that after she got her trunk packed. She had some coat hangers in the bottom drawer nothing in the next one. 4 dresses in the next and her cosmetics in the top drawerand thats all she had to put in it. Some more cranky Haman Stunts - Just imagine carrying a trunk to C. City where she's home every week end and between times too I guess. As i'll write you again Sunday I must quit. Martha how's the dress coming? I hope you're not having to work too hard. [illegible] I could see you both though Let me hear how you're getting along- Worlds of love Mom-
