Christine and Martha Smith Box 888 M.S.C.W. Columbus, Miss _ Sunday Night Dear Christine & Martha Im afraid I'm not going to be able to write you a very good letter tonight (like I usually do) as I'm sick- I was sick all night last night Daddy was up heating water and doctoring me at 2:30 this morning of course I wasn't able to go to church today so the Bishop came over to see me this afternoon. I won't go tonight either as I'm not equal to it. Bernice said there was no one to play at S.S. and Ora B. played for church I flatter myself into wondering what they'd do if I were to die or move off. Christine you're saying "oh, they'd get along ok" Maybe so- Bernice and Charlcie spent the night with Mary at Bruce friday night They said they had a very good time. Mary boards at the hotel - next Sunday they're planning to go to the Shiloh Park and Muscle Shoals with Bud Burnett Mary and I don't know who else. They're going to leave Bruce about 3 oclock.. Bernice got most of her money from Webster Co. She got her a real pretty ^brown dress at Gordon's for $13 00 also shoes & purse She hasn't found her a brown hat yet. The dress is trimmed in gold buttons and has a gold cord very dressy and beautiful material. Bernice is gone now with Charlcie to Bruce to carry Mary back. I guess the she's at the league now. I guess they will quit having the League for a while as Martha H. is going to board at C. City from now on and there's nobody to get up a program- Martha H. has just come in and She and Bernice have decided to leave off having the league for a while They are going on to church in a minute - Martha H said she had to get a $1000 raise so I suppose she is getting $3500 now. She says she likes her work and is going to board with her Aunt June. Mr. Sherman has a new housekeeper, a Mrs Dulaney a real nice woman. A Methodist and a good church worker. We're mighty glad she's here as we need her. We had the church piano moved to Kathryn Wooten's. I guess Mrs Wosson is good and mad because you know she expected to keep the piano Mary Goar came up to see me and wanted to keep the piano as Loretta is going to take music We decided we'd put it where there were no children. I guess we'll have the Missionary Society at Kathryn's all the time now. Clelia saw the parsonage walls looks pretty since they have the new paper on. I guess Warren and Mary Nell will soon have it looking nice - Lois and Less are still seperated - He says he never intends living with her any more. I'm sure they'll get back together sooner or later tho- I'll send you all the Monthly Herald so you can read Bro. Breland's column It should be just like a letter from home. Pauline B. Bessie, Mary Betty and a few others put a crimp in those wanting to get rid of Bro B- and getting Cecil, so I guess the old man will be here till he dies. I think Bessie is afraid Vera would try to boss their W.M.U Clelia got a letter from Jessie saying he was to be transferred to Michigan City not fo so far from Memphis but in Miss - Elizabeth is still in Prairie keeping books for her pa and Dwight is week ending up there. Clelia & Chester went to Oxford this week I'm sure Leon could not have a shadow of a chance of playing football but Clelia says the Dr didn't think he should play on account of his leg he got hurt last winter. I just wonder if he'll stay up there as of course where he can't play ball they won't pay his expenses and Chester doesn't have any job so I don't know how they'll manage- Dad came home Friday and will be here till after the Lee trial which opens tomorrow after he gets thro here his to be transferred to Corinth for two weeks on acct of the man who has that territory living near Meridian and his wife is sick in the hospital so he wants to be near her while she's sick They are merely exchanging places for two weeks. i'd like to go with him up there so I could go to Shiloh park but I can't go- I'm about to give up the idea od going to Annual conference next month too. I don't see how I can leave- I think Victor was quite surprised to get his job as he'd given up the idea I guess Allen got busy and helped him land it - Gilbert Goar's whiskey case was cla called Tues and he was too drunk to appear the Judge set the case for tomorrow and told Judge Lamar to have him here sober I guess he's going to dissapointed tho as Bernice said they passed him near Bruce tonight standing in the road drunk as a bird Bernice has been on faithful attendent at court every afternoon this week she seems to be enjoying it very much. I think I'm going to send you a little package the last of the week if nothing happens. I saw Sla & Louie pass today with arms intwined they marched thro town and never did unclasp. Oh! how happy they must be - the P.T.A. sold hamburgers three days this week and will sell tomorrow I only helped one day but will work tomorrow if I feel like it. They've already collected about $4000 . I think that's pretty good- Bernice seems to be getting along fine with her school work She had to buy her about 5 or 6 dollars worth of books. the other day Lou Ellen surprised me very Much by saying, "Pauline, Jame Harold sure do like Bernice for a teacher-" I had felt like she might resent the fact that James H would have a class under her. I'm glad the little old kid likes her and hope he continues to Chris did Chick come to see you? You never did say. I saw a little something in your paper about peanuts being connected with him. I enjoy reading the Spec. Miss Rosie has been cooking for Ms. Cooner during court. I guess Mrs Easley is jealous tho he's still feeding her pig- He calls Miss Rosie, "Rosie." now so I guess it will all work out to the good of both parties tho I'm afraid I won't get any more water mellons- Lou is helping Mr. Lane with a long pencil run thro her knot of hair as usual She looks worse than Mrs. Stoddard and by the way Martha, Miss Theresy saw Bernice at the court house and said her- "why in the world don't you come to see me? Martha used to come and so did Pauline when she was a girl." "I want you to come now." If I ever visited the old girl I haven't any recollection of it but of course I know you used to visit her lots of times - I want you to be sure to go see her when you get home again. Well, I didn't have any idea I'd write this much when I started but I must quit now and go to bed. I do hope you are both feeling fine and that everything is running smooth Joe Sheffield is never absent a minute from the bar this week. He looks to be the most important lawyer up there I really feel proud of the man- Write me when you can. I may write you a line in a few days- Be good girls Love from all Mother-
