SHSmith Senate Chamber STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON Mrs. S. H. Smith Calhoun Co. Pittsboro Miss. Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON Sat nite Dear "Sweet heart" This is one time I am loansome too! I recon Mr. Lamar told you why I did not come home. I wanted to so bad I told Chairman Kyle they were out voting us on the floor - and I had decided to go home and stay till Tues morning He asked me if it was imperative that I go I told him as far as business was concerned it was not. He then insisted in me staying over and attend the Sat meeting as he was sure the Com. vote would be close in some cases and that my vote might be the deciding factor on some important measure. I then agreed to stay as he has fought hard to hand the appropriations in the bonds of the proposed budget Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON We staid in session till 12 today I presume we have had our last day sitting - the charity Hospt bill was before us for hearing - you know all our Hosptl's are local - and we have no State Hosptl's nearer us than "Jaxon" we in north Miss have to pay taxes for the upkeep of these State institutions and get little of the benefits. We asked an appropriation for our local Hospt'als for charity patients and the bill from the House proposed to give us $200000 for the two years for each of ours which was a mere "bagatell" I got the Com. to agree to raise this Houston will get 250000 each year or $500000 for the two years if we can put it over - if this can be done I will have spent my time well to day in the intent of some poor "devil" Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON will tell you all about it when I get home "after I get through hugging you" Saw Dennis Clara Francis and Imogene on short to night and accepted their invitation to attend the show with them - the first one I have attended since you were here and that seems like a long time don't it? Show was fairly good - Imogenie has gained 9 lbs in the 8 weeks and looks much better - I said I was loansome - no one here but me Joe is "galavanting" somewhere and I am loansome sure enough - as this is the first time I have been alone at night since occupying this room. Will adjourn Wed - 12 oclock - or supposed to possibly will be night - but all seem to think Wed will be the last I will be delighted I assure you. Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON I tell them all I believe I am the most fully satisfied man here ([illegible]) when it comes tot he matter of quitting and leaving - We could have gotten through tonight had it n ot been for the determination of the Dictator going to "rule or ruin" - they are framing another bill to come out Mon. I think we all have them whipped - but they are persistent - some of them have intimated filing impeachment charges against me for I don't know what unless it be for giving them so much "grief" "You may know I am worried" "Fan that score" I do hope you are feeling well- I recon this is the longest I have ever been away from home since Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON mixed our things and it seems to me just about a year - Joe wanted me to lets go today but I just hated to go to the expense the thief would entail and have so little time to stay - and told him I was going to stick it out and that if I was like him would not think of going I will have lots to tell you when I come - The fate of the Linburgh baby was awful - and I was depressed when the news was flashed - yet I was not surprised - as I never had any hope for him after first week - such a vivid illustration that wrath and provence - is no guarantee against the troubles that beset us mortals in some form or another Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON I am sure no deeper grieved mother than Mrs. Linburg lives tonight. I enclose a clipping I saw tonight and wonder - where is the dividing line referred to - also another I saw "Mothers day" - (I gave 28 cts for a rose mothers day and wore it) Some time I want our boy's picture made - and the inclosure under it it might impress him in latter years - I think the sentiment sublime. I also am enclosing a clipping from a bird who thinks the rich should have it all I am sure he was prompted by some Jaxonians to [illegible] it for the effect it might have on the present legislature - also my reply. Keep them for me Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON I am going to close now - be sweet as you always have been - and remember my thoughts on all of you and ours' I love you as of yore and will always be the same unworthy "Daddy" Tell the kiddos I love them all and to please be good to you
