SH Smith Senate Chamber STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON Mrs S. H. Smith Calhoun Co Pittsboro Miss. Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON Wednesday "nite" My dear "big baby" As per my promise am going to write at least a wee "bit" to you - I have about four or five pens- I have had in the room ever since I came here and they are all worn out as just as scratchy as can be and I cannot think even to get some more from the Capitol but those I would get are not much better as they have the "crummiest" pens and ink I ever saw anywhere the Court house at Pittsboro has them skimmed - so this will account in part for the partial illegibility of my scribble - Have had another busy day not quite as bad as yesterday though - Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON Was called before the Gov - this morning as he inferred from the newspapers that I was reflecting on his administration in consequence of my introducing the "Warrenite" resultion which you have seen in the papers - I squared the matter with him, but would not care if I had not as I have no regrets for my actions. If you have not seen the "Jaxon" papers - will bring them when I come - The resolution was referred to the Judiciary Com. I was called before them at 2 P.M. for an hour I did not give them my full information as to names ect witnesses ect for they reason they were not the proper ones to have Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON this but I held that the Com an investigation in the event one should be appointed was the proper body to have this - all this was in executive session which means in secret from the public and newspapers- The Com. gave the resolution an unfavorable report this evening which means the Senate will not consider I am now going before the Senate tomorrow on a point point of personal privilege and make the same statement, then there will be some more "stir" its right funny - I am astounded at the high handed legislation being attempted and which will more than likely be enacted before the close of the session - Mississippi State Senate SENATOR S. H. SMITH Thirty-First District Pittsboro COMMITTEE ASSIGNMENTS Executive Contingent Fund, Chairman Pensions, Vice-Chairman Registrations and Elections Roads, Ferries and Bridges Temperance Military Finance JACKSON In the finance meeting tonight some of the leaders predict that we can not get away from here Sat but would adjourn probably Wednesday - I certainly hope to get away Sat - Don't "pine nor fret" because it would be very long - at best I spoke this evening against any appropriation for colleges--and gave my reasons - I was the only one to vote against the bill but some of the ablist men in the body stated privately that my theory was sound - Will write you again tomorrow "nite" a few lines any - if nothing more than to tell you I love you dearly - and that if possible "absence makes the heart grow fonder" Love to all my babies - Always "Dad"
