SH Smith Senate Chamber STATE OF MISSISSIPPI JACKSON Mrs. S.H. Smith Pittsboro Miss Senate Chamber STATE OF MISSISSIPPI S. H. SMITH, Senator Thirty-First District Pittsboro, Miss. JACKSON, MISS., 1/19/1932 Dearest "Big Sis" Have just returned from the informal reception at the Capitol from 8 till 10 p.m., it really meant from 8 till 11- This concludes my part of the program relative to the inauguration However the inaugural race has just gotten under headway and will continue until the "Wee [illegible] hours" I didn't brave any of this part of the program You will see a complete history of the program in the papers. There was no discounting the fact that a monstrous crowd was present, and seemingly a majority at least felt that our troubles of state were over I wish I knew they were right, but I know they are not. Senate Chamber STATE OF MISSISSIPPI S. H. SMITH, Senator Thirty-First District Pittsboro, Miss. JACKSON, MISS. Gov. Conners' message you will see in the papers was a lengthy document, he delivered it to thousands through loud speaker, and it was unusually well received and I think with few exceptions was a master piece, and worthy of the reception accreded it I guess we will get down to business tomorrow, as the frills are all now removed, We had quite a delegation from Calhoun present, among them, Mayor Beasly W.O. Lance Ben Kyle Lt Bingham Max Parker Finley and J B Going and others, I wish you could have been here but you would have been tired out ere this, I are sure Sonny Boy is doing well or I would have heard from him. Senate Chamber STATE OF MISSISSIPPI S. H. SMITH, Senator Thirty-First District Pittsboro, Miss. Jackson, MISS. I got your other letter when I returned was glad to get it really appreciated its contents, I met quite a number of people tonight among them Mrs. Ges Mitchell who by the way is great lady making no pretense as a society woman Mrs. Cody whom I think is a very elegant lady very entertaining and attractive she was very nice to me and invited me to visit them, and also insisted that Bernice visit them, ( I wrote Bernice today) I appreciate the honor conferred on me by my people and are glad of an opportunity to serve and try and do my bit for Miss in here trying [illegible] but were it not for ambition as well as a master of business, I would leave here tonight and come home. Senate Chamber STATE OF MISSISSIPPI S. H. SMITH, Senator Thirty-First District Pittsboro, Miss. Jackson, MISS. I don't like city life even in a City of this size. I could be happier as far as I am concerned with you and the Kids- where we are or even farther removed from the ever surfing restless throng seeking pleasure and finding none that I could in any congested center regardless of what my position might be, "The boast of heraldry the pomp of power "and all that beauty and wealth ere gave "Await alike the inevitable hour" is most assuredly here, Don't know when I will get home again but it will be the first chance I get when the expense is not to heavy, Hope you have Aunt Ollie so you are not loansomer.
